It's been a year of change and transition in the nation's highest court. On July 12, a panel of constitutional experts discussed the implications of newly appointed justices and significant rulings during Justice Talking's annual Supreme Court Roundup, taped before a crowd at the National Constitutional Center in Philadelphia.
Joan Biskupic, a Supreme Court journalist for USA Today, was joined onstage by Richard Epstein, professor of law at the University of Chicago, and Kathleen Sullivan, professor of law and former dean at Stanford Law School. Along with host Margot Adler, the group examined the appointments of new Chief Justice John Roberts and of Justice Samuel Alito, analyzed their respective judicial styles and pondered rulings made by the court over the past year. The debate touched on state's rights, search and seizure, and the Hamdan v. Rumsfeld ruling striking down detainee tribunals at Guantanamo Bay.
Throughout the taping, audience members were passed the microphone to pose their questions about the Roberts Court to the panel and share their thoughts on what this period of transformation - the most significant in over a decade - means for the future of the federal judiciary.
