Overview

A Georgia court recently ordered the Cobb County public schools to remove an anti-evolution sticker from textbooks, renewing the nearly century-old battle between science and religion. How far can school systems go to require the teaching of creationism and the theory of "Intelligent Design" without violating the Constitution’s mandate to separate church and state?

Paul Nelson is a fellow of the Center for Science and Culture of the Discovery Institute, and visiting faculty in the Master of Arts Program in Science & Religion at Biola University. He is a member of the Society for Developmental Biology and the International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology.

Niall Shanks is a professor of philosophy at East Tennessee State University, where he also teaches in the departments of biological sciences and physics. Shanks specializes in theoretical biology, theoretical physics, logic, probability theory, and epistemology, and he is a leading critic of intelligent design theory. In addition to numerous scholarly articles, he is the author of “God, the Devil, and Darwin.”
