Overview

In the last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down anti-sodomy laws, a same-sex marriage case was argued successfully before the Massachusetts Supreme Court, and New Jersey recently enacted The Domestic Partnership Act. Gay marriage has found its way to the frontlines of America’s culture wars. Advocates for gay rights say cultural norms are changing and that acceptance of same-sex unions is closer than you think. Others caution against both optimism and acceptance saying that most Americans still support what they see as traditional families.

Lara H. Schwartz is senior counsel for the Human Rights Campaign, specializing in federal legislation on taxes, benefits and other issues that affect the everyday lives of LGBT people and their families. Following a clerkship on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, Ms. Schwartz was in private practice, where she focused on securities litigation and regulatory work, insurance litigation, legislative redistricting, and voting, housing and disability rights. She is admitted to the bars of Maryland and Washington, D.C.
